A Single High Glucose Result ≠ Diabetes · HAINICE Guides You to Read Blood Sugar

Edit date:2026-05-14

Getting a high blood sugar result and feeling anxious? Don’t worry! A rise in blood sugar does not necessarily mean you have diabetes. It is often caused by physiological fluctuations or other reversible factors.

HAINICE Biotechnology (Dandong) Co., Ltd. shares professional knowledge on blood sugar interpretation, helping you view test results rationally and avoid unnecessary worry.

1. Normal Blood Sugar Reference Range (Venous Blood / Fingerstick Blood)

  • Fasting blood sugar: 3.9–6.1 mmol/L
  • 2-hour postprandial blood sugar: <7.8 mmol/L
  • Random blood sugar: <7.8 mmol/L

2. Different Conditions of Elevated Blood Sugar

Physiological Blood Sugar Fluctuation

Strenuous exercise, intense mood swings, staying up late, overeating, or excessive sugar intake may cause a temporary rise in blood sugar. After removing these triggers and adjusting lifestyle habits, blood sugar can usually return to normal, with no need for excessive concern.

Prediabetes State

A fasting blood sugar level of 6.1–7.0 mmol/L, or a 2-hour postprandial level of 7.8–11.1 mmol/L, indicates prediabetes.

At this stage, pancreatic islet function is already impaired but does not meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes. This is a critical intervention window. Proper diet, regular exercise, and weight management can effectively reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes Diagnostic Guidelines

Diabetes should be suspected if any of the following criteria is met on two separate days:

  • Fasting blood sugar ≥7.0 mmol/L
  • 2-hour postprandial blood sugar ≥11.1 mmol/L
  • Random blood sugar ≥11.1 mmol/L

A single elevated fingerstick reading cannot be used for diagnosis. It is recommended to visit a hospital for venous blood testing, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) examination and other professional assessments, with a final diagnosis made by medical professionals.

Important Compliance Reminder

There are differences between fingerstick blood and venous blood test results. Readings from household blood glucose meters are for daily monitoring reference only and cannot be used to diagnose diabetes.

Please read the product instructions carefully, or purchase and use the device under the guidance of medical professionals.
